Pyrite, or iron sulfide, is often referred to as Fool s Gold for very apparent reasons.
It naturally crystallizes in a cubic form and is considered an ubiquitous mineral because it is found in igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks all around the world. The term “pyrite” comes from the Greek word pyr meaning “fire” as this mineral can actually create sparks for fire when struck against metal.
The pyrite from Navajún, La Rioja, Spain were formed during the Mesozoic at the end of the Jurassic Period, roughly 120 million years ago. They originated within the sediments of a large delta that covered the Cameros Sierra and are contemporary with dinosaurs living in the same area as made evident by fossils found near the mine.
The Navajún mine began work in the 1960s and is the only mine where the pyrite is exclusively used for collectors and decoration purposes. Navajún pyrite is world-known and coveted for collections because of their complete crystals and beautiful metallic shine.
